Flame worked, Borosilicate Glass and Mixed Media
14in. x 14in. x 14in.
The Chrysler Museum of Art has numerous beautiful items in its “Ancient World’s and Nonwestern Art” collection. This section of the museum tends to have many objects that are not only captivating to look at but they also have a particular function they served during their age. By looking at these pieces through the lens of an Art Museum I feel we over look the original purpose these objects had in favor of their craftsmanship and design.
One of the most prominent pieces whose function was far more important than its aesthetics is the 19th century Samurai Armor. This piece stands stoically against the wall holding back its once brutal purpose of protecting its wearer from evisceration. My response to this piece is to sculpt a scene of glass, Samurai, warrior figures mid duel to remind us of the reason armor was originally created.
